Kinross announced an expansion project for the Tasiast gold mine in Mauritania in 2016, which has been successfully completed. The project was carried out in two phases, and has increased production, lowered costs and made the mine viable and sustainable in the long term. Phase one cost approximately $300 million and increased mill throughput from 8,000 to 12,000 tonnes per day. Full production capacity for phase one was achieved in the first quarter of 2018, with a possible extension to the second quarter. Following the success of phase one, Kinross received approval for phase two, which further expanded ore treatment capacity to 30,000 tonnes per day, with estimated development costs of $620 million.

The Process of Gold Production at Tasiast Mine, Mauritania

The Tasiast Mine in Mauritania produces gold through a two-step process. First, drilling holes at the bottom of the pit, detonating charges, and loading ore onto trucks that are transported to different locations depending on the ore's grade. High-grade ore is sent to the CIL plant, low-grade ore is stacked on dump leach pads, and barren ore is deposited separately. Second, the ore is processed through crushing, milling, and chemical treatment to extract the gold particles. The enriched solution is then pumped to the electrowinning cell to plate the gold onto the cathode, which is then removed, filtered, and dried to be smelted into bullion.
